The priority of the company should be budgeting to maintain the essential skills and experience that staff apply in maintaining and operating the railway and not spurious software which doesn’t provide the means to do anything which isn’t possible without it. We would hope that Network Rail have been able to negotiate a cheaper price for the Blink App given their number of staff considered potential users – but this still represents a substantial cost at a time of supposed austerity. The cost of the Blink App with only basic functionality is given on their website as £2.65 per person, per month. Members will be aware that Network Rail are intent on making cuts to the railway for which the only result will be the degradation of safety on the railway, with the justification being that these are necessary to save money. In addition to the points raised in my earlier letter, there are other serious concerns about the Blink App. This puts members in a precarious position. Having written to Network Rail and set out several important points that would guarantee that members are safeguarded from any potential abuse of the data the application collects and could be used for, I am afraid that the company have not replied to give the assurance sought.
